How soon after FUE can you dye or color the hair without messing up the grafts?

Had the transplant a while back and I’m thinking about covering some of the grey that is starting to show more. The new hair is growing in but it is still pretty fine. Is there a proper waiting period before you can put any kind of dye or color on it, or do most clinics just say to wait until it is fully settled? Also curious if permanent dye is different from the semi permanent stuff in terms of risk to the skin or the grafts.

most places say wait at least 4 to 6 months before any dye. the skin is still healing and the follicles are not fully locked in yet. permanent dye is harsher than the semi permanent ones so that is usually the one they want you to avoid longer.

yeah that tracks. the first few months the scalp is more sensitive and the new hairs are still thin. putting chemicals on them early can irritate the area or make the hair break more easily. better to wait until the texture starts to feel closer to normal.

do you know if the 4 to 6 month thing is the same for both permanent and temporary color or is temporary safer earlier?

temporary is usually considered safer a bit earlier but a lot of clinics still push for the full 6 months either way. they dont want any chance of inflammation while the grafts are maturing.

The general recommendation is to avoid any chemical process until the transplanted hair has gone through a full growth cycle and the scalp is no longer pink or sensitive. That is typically around the 6 month mark for most people. Before that the risk is more about irritation and breakage than the grafts actually dying.
