Donor: Should you leave some donor untouched even if the clinic says one procedure is enough?

Most clinics quote a number and say that covers everything. I keep wondering if it makes more sense to leave a chunk of the donor alone in case another procedure is needed later.

Is there a general approach most surgeons use for how much donor to keep in reserve, or do they just take what the current plan needs and deal with the future if it comes up? Trying to figure out if holding some back is actually useful or just wastes grafts now.

most places will take what the current plan needs if you tell them you only want one procedure. leaving a reserve is more common when the loss is still active or the patient is younger. once the pattern is stable a lot of them just use what is required for the job instead of holding a big chunk back

Leaving some donor is mainly useful if more loss is expected later. If the hairline and crown are already planned out and the loss has slowed then most surgeons just extract what is needed. Holding a large reserve can mean the first result ends up thinner than it could have been.

if the loss has been stable for a while the reserve idea matters less. the focus stays on getting the current areas covered properly. saving a big portion only really helps when more recession is still likely

Got it. So the reserve is more about expected future loss than a fixed rule. If everything looks stable now then using most of what is available for the first procedure makes more sense.

The usual thinking is to leave enough that a second procedure stays possible if the native hair keeps going. That does not mean leaving a huge untouched area. Most plans still extract the majority of what is safe for the first session and keep a smaller reserve. Taking almost everything now only becomes a problem if more coverage is needed later and the donor is already low.
