Can you still cut the sides very short after a big FUE or does the donor always show?

Planning around 3500 grafts and I usually keep the sides pretty short. A couple clinics said the donor will look fine even with a fade, others said you should leave it a bit longer so the extraction pattern does not show.

Is it realistic to keep a short cut on the sides after a larger FUE, or do most people end up having to grow it out a little so the donor area blends? Trying to understand what actually happens once everything heals.

A short cut is still possible after a larger FUE but pure skin fades tend to reveal the extraction pattern. Most people settle on a slightly longer fade once it heals. The difference is usually only a few millimeters but it makes the donor look cleaner.

It depends on how evenly the extractions were done and how many grafts came out. Clean, spread out harvesting usually allows a short fade once the hair grows back. Tight or overharvested areas show more when the sides are clipped very close. Most clinics that plan for short styles aim to keep the pattern light enough that a normal fade still works after 8 to 12 months.
